Chillin with Ceres Chill: New Mom Mental Health

New Mom Mental Health: Baby Blues, PPD, and Finding Support
Chillin with Ceres Chill | Episode Recap

TW: This post discusses postpartum depression, anxiety, and related mental health topics. Please take care while reading. You are not alone, and your mental health matters.

Postpartum life can be full of tender moments, sleepless nights, and overwhelming emotions. While some of that is expected, there’s a difference between the typical “baby blues” and something deeper, like postpartum depression (PPD) or postpartum anxiety (PPA).

In our latest Chillin with Ceres Chill episode, we sat down with Morgan Williams, a licensed professional counselor at ReHope Counseling, to unpack the realities of postpartum mental health—and how to navigate it with compassion, honesty, and support.

💬 Meet Morgan Williams

Morgan specializes in maternal mental health and brings both professional expertise and deep empathy to her work. In this episode, we talk about both of our journeys with mental health and how it has impacted us personally and professionally.

🌱 What Is Postpartum Mental Health?

We dig into what mental health challenges can look like after birth—beyond the clichés. Morgan breaks down the difference between “baby blues” and diagnosable conditions like PPD and PPA, and emphasizes how common and treatable they are.

Baby blues is typically a temporary experience where you might feel extra emotional, teary, or irritable for up to two weeks postpartum. If symptoms are more intense or last longer than two weeks, that’s a sign it may be time to seek professional help. You don’t need to wait until things feel unbearable—early support is powerful.

⚠️ Spotting the Signs

Early signs can often go unnoticed or brushed off. Morgan walks us through common symptoms to watch for, including:

  • Persistent sadness or crying spells

  • Intense irritability or rage

  • Feeling disconnected from your baby

  • Excessive worry or intrusive thoughts

  • Fatigue that goes beyond typical sleep deprivation

  • Insomnia, or not being able to sleep even when your baby is

🌸 Simple Self-Care for Overwhelmed Moms

Morgan shares simple, low-effort self-care strategies for new parents. These include grounding techniques, adjusting expectations, and the importance of asking for help—even when it feels awkward.

And here’s a reframe: when you ask for help, not only are you getting the support you need, you’re also showing others that it’s okay to ask. You’re normalizing care and community.

💞 Supporting Loved Ones Through PPD or PPA

This episode isn’t just for moms—Morgan shares how partners, friends, and family can best show up. Hint: listening and validating someone’s experience is huge.

Support people have a big role in the postpartum experience. One of the most helpful things they can do is do. Instead of asking “What can I do?”, try saying, “I’m going to do [X]—is there a specific way I can help that’ll make it easier for you?” Whether that’s washing pump parts, prepping snacks, or handling the next diaper change—small actions go a long way.

😴 Sleep, Stress & Barriers to Care

Sleep—or lack thereof—is such a huge part of the postpartum experience. And honestly, whoever came up with “sleep like a baby” clearly never had cracked nipples or cluster feeding to deal with. Personally? I’d rather sleep like my husband!

In this episode, we also talk about:

  • How sleep deprivation affects mental health

  • What to do when you’re running on fumes

  • Whether caffeine is a friend or foe

  • The stigma and logistical barriers that prevent so many parents from seeking help

💡 When & How to Seek Help

Morgan offers guidance on when it’s time to reach out to a mental health professional, and how to get started if it all feels overwhelming. She also recommends helpful online and written resources like:

🌼 Final Words of Encouragement

If there’s one takeaway Morgan wants to leave you with, it’s this: You don’t have to do this alone. Asking for help doesn’t make you weak—it means you’re strong enough to take care of yourself, too.

You Are Not Alone
If you’re struggling or unsure if what you’re feeling is “normal,” please know that you’re not alone. Talk to someone you trust. Reach out to a professional. You deserve support, healing, and peace.
