The Study That Is Challenging Everything
My experience returning to work as a new mom made me create the Chiller - the first (and still the best) Chiller in the world. But that experience also gave me something else: a deep, personal conviction that moms deserve better information, better tools, and better systems. That when the guidance isn't working for the people it's supposed to serve, it's worth asking why and whether it needs to change.
Which is why this new study is so important.
Breastmilk Is Not Regular Milk
Moms and researchers have been shouting it from the rooftops for years, but it still seems to be overlooked.
Breastmilk is not a standardized product. It is not cow's milk. It's a living, dynamic, biologically complex fluid.
Its antimicrobial and antibacterial properties actively work to destroy bacteria in a way that no other substance does. Its composition changes from day-to-day, from feed-to-feed and from mom-to-mom. It helps with cuts and infections. It provides significant protection against the risk and severity of many illnesses.
In 2015, researchers discovered that breastmilk mixed with a baby's saliva actually produces hydrogen peroxide capable of killing staph and salmonella. The milk isn't just feeding the baby, it’s actively responding to them.
There is truly nothing like it in the world. Breastmilk is doing something that nothing else on earth can replicate.
So how is it possible that it can’t withstand more than 4 hours at room temperature? Why do we need to toss ounces of milk after our baby drinks a bottle because they’ve ‘introduced bacteria’?
The Answer Is...
We don’t know. Breastmilk has been notoriously neglected in research for decades compared to other substances - so much so, that many of the current guidelines are based on how regular foods react to temperature change.
We know more about coffee, wine and tomatoes than we do about breastmilk.
The argument against mixing warm milk with cold milk doesn’t cite any breastmilk research and hasn’t been updated in decades. Even the 4 hour room temperature cutoff is conservative, with research showing that bacteria growth in fresh milk is relatively slow and 6-8 hours is safe if pumped with clean hands, clean pump parts and clean bottles.
We know that many of these guidelines are extra conservative because they’re designed to be simple and safe for ALL babies - medically fragile infants included. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it does create confusion and unnecessary work for parents.
We also know that guidelines should be regularly examined and updated based on new research…so let’s get into it!
THE TWO HOUR RULE
For as long as we can remember, we’ve been told that leftover breastmilk from a bottle needs to be discarded after two hours due to potential bacteria growth.
If you’re a pumping mom who has worked hard for that milk, you know how upsetting that is.
More recent research looked at leftover breastmilk from 44 infant feedings and found that all cases remained stable and uncompromised by bacteria growth for:

More than half of infants globally receive some bottle feeding before six months of age, so this could change the game.
The Part That's Confusing for Parents All Over...
Breastmilk storage rules aren't very consistent between organizations and around the world.
France says 48 hours in the fridge. The NHS says up to 8 days. The WHO says up to 5. If the science were settled, the guidelines would match.

What This Means for Moms Right Now
This new 2026 study isn’t peer reviewed yet, so no updates in guidelines have been made at this time. Those guidelines exist because infant safety is the priority, and I'm not telling anyone to ignore them.
What I am saying is that you deserve to know this research exists. The guidelines you've been following vary significantly by country and weren't built on the kind of direct microbiological evidence this study provides. That matters. Have the conversation with your healthcare provider. Stay informed.
We're watching this research closely and we'll keep sharing what we find. For now - you’re the mom and the expert, so the most important thing is to do what YOU feel is best after researching the topic. And if the guidance doesn't make sense, it's okay to ask why.
